The
Hagia Theodora School of Byzantine Iconography holds workshops to help introduce this
precious liturgical art to small groups up to 12. Workshops are an intensive 4-day elementary
study of simplified Holy Iconography for beginner and intermediate level
adults or children with little or
no artistic experience.
We
invite you to come and experience a retreat-like setting where fasting and
prayer are encouraged for the duration of the classes. Each participant
will receive a prepared wooden icon panel, gold leaf, brush/pencil, tracing
pattern and natural pigmented hand-formulated egg tempera paint (children
will use water-based tempera paint). The
technique is taught through master instructor step-by-step demonstration
on an easel placed within students' view. Included in the course are
lectures on Holy Iconography history and theology, slide presentations and
printed prayers. Each completed icon will be varnished on the last day of
the course for the student to take home!
Typically,
workshops are scheduled from 9 to 3pm over a period of 4 days: Monday
to Thursday or Friday to
Monday (to incorporate a weekend and accommodate those with a regular work
week schedule). Please
check our homepage frequently for announcements, schedules and costs.
Workshops are held at the Iconography Studio or are hosted privately at a sponsoring parish hall.
Also, with provided travel and accommodations, the instructor will travel to any
city or state to conduct a workshop. As a Thank You gift, the hosting party or
parish always receives the instructor's fully completed icon.
