The Hagia Theodora School of  Byzantine Iconography holds workshops to help introduce iconography to small groups up to 12. Workshops are an intensive 4-day elementary study of iconography for beginner and intermediate levels with little or no artist experience.

We invite you to come and experience a retreat-like setting where fasting and prayer are encouraged for the duration of the classes. Each participant will receive a prepared wooden icon panel, brushes/pencil, a tracing pattern and natural pigments to hand-formulate egg tempera paints. The technique is taught through master instructor demonstration, step-by-step, on an easel placed before the students. Included in the course are lectures on iconography history and theology, slide presentations and printed prayers. Each completed icon will be varnished on the last day of the course for the student to take home!

Typically, workshops are scheduled from 9 to 3pm over a period of 4 days:

Monday to Thursday or Friday to Monday (to incorporate a weekend and accommodate those with a regular work week schedule).

Please check this page frequently for announcements, schedules and costs. Workshops are held at the Iconography Studio or are hosted privately at a sponsoring parish hall. Also, with provided travel and accommodations, the instructor will travel to any city or state to conduct a workshop. As a Thank You gift, the hosting party or parish always receives the instructor's fully completed icon.
